New Study Raises The Question – Can CBD Help Fight COVID Infection?
CBD has become a popular topic in the wellness world, with many people using it to help with conditions such as anxiety and chronic pain. Some recent research suggests that CBD may also help fight off COVID infection. In this post, we’ll take a look at the evidence behind this claim and explore how CBD could potentially be used to prevent and treat COVID. Stay safe and healthy out there!
In the SciTechDaily article above, Professor Marsha Rosner, the senior author of the in-depth study is quoted as saying, “CBD has anti-inflammatory effects, so we thought that maybe it would stop the second phase of COVID infection involving the immune system, the so-called ‘cytokine storm, surprisingly, it directly inhibited viral replication in lung cells.”
Professor Rosner also noted that a recent study of over 1200 patients from the National COVID Cohort Collaborative revealed that patients taking a medically prescribed oral solution of CBD for the treatment of epilepsy tested positive for COVID-19 at significantly lower rates than a sample of matched patients from similar demographic backgrounds who were not taking CBD.
Can CBD Help Fight COVID Infection? What We Know
CBD has long been revered for its health benefits. Since 2018, the FDA has approved it for treating severe cases of epilepsy for patients age 2 and older. Also, several spa houses use the oil extract to reduce patients’ anxiety. In the light of such confirmed health benefits, we understand if you think CBD can treat COVID. But can it? Can CBD help fight COVID infection? If yes, how?
You are in the right place. Here, we shall discuss the role of CBD in fighting COVID, what it does and it can’t do. That said, let’s delve into the details!
Ordinarily, no one could ever imagine CBD fighting COVID. Unless we are talking about calming the anxiety that comes from contracting the infection. However, the report from the analysis of N3C 1212 patients opened the window for a fresh perspective. From the analysis, patients using FDA-approved CBD for epilepsy tested positive for COVID-19 less than those who don’t take CBD.
So, deductively, CBD fights COVID, eh?
Not so fast! Some of the CBD-using patients still tested positive – they only tested less than non-CBD users. In other words, we still need further study to confirm if CBD can effectively combat COVID. So, to answer the question, we’ll say CBD can fight COVID partially, and it shows promises. Let’s explain what we mean!
If we say CBD reduces the spread of COVID infection within a patient, yes, it can do that. However, CBD won’t stop you from contracting the virus in the first place. It doesn’t reinforce your immune system to block the virus entry.
So, if CBD doesn’t eradicate COVID or stop you from contracting the infection, how does it help?
How Does CBD Fight COVID Infection? It Reduces The Replication of COVID according to researchers from UChicago and can stop COVID from spreading within the cells of a patient. Since the plant extract already contains anti-inflammatory compounds, the researchers posited that it could fight the virus.
To that effect, the researchers treated human lung cells with CBD 2hours before exposing them to COVID. Afterward, they found zero viral replication in the treated cells.
Furthermore, the researchers claimed that CBD blocked COVID viral replication in the lung cell for up to six hours. From there, they increased the concentration of the CBD, and it almost completely stopped the viral replication.
Not All CBD Can Help
According to the study, using just any kind of CBD or CBD-related substances has little effect on reducing the chances of COVID viral replication. In particular, substances such as CBDA, CBDV, and THC have no effect whatsoever on COVID. In fact, combining them with CBD can limit its effectiveness against combating the infection. Overall, your best bet remains the oral CBD solution.
CBD is showing great promise at stopping the spread of viral cells in tissues.
The next step is full human trials which are forthcoming.
